With Christmas just around the corner many of us are still deciding on what marvellous gifts we are going to get for our beloved. Here at BUNKER48 we have rounded up our top 5 gadgety gifts that we would love to get our hands on. If you’re still stuck read on, we hope this post will provide some inspiration.

Reminiscent of that infamous face-hugger scene in Aliens, Life-Phorm is a rather creepy-looking device resembling a cross between an arthropod and an outer space robotic monster that looks like its sole purpose is to implant a fertilised egg into the host’s mouth!

However, despite these blood-curdling associations, this plastic stand is a rather handy all-in-one mounting system for tablet computers, smart phones and cameras. Its adjustable holder firmly grasps your device while the six legs, with three points of articulation on each and hooks at the end designed for hanging off surfaces, provide the required flexibility to arrange the stand in a number of convenient positions.

At present still only available in the US, Canada and India.

What better way to teach your kids all they need to know about the universe at large than with this reflector telescope? More than just a toy gadget, it boasts a 76mm diameter mirror, a focal length of 700mm, a 5×24 finder scope, three 1.25″ diameter American standard professional sized eyepieces and a 3X Barlow lens for a power range of 35 times to 525 times.

Delivering quality images both at night and during the day you could soon find yourself arguing over who gets first go at stargazing!

At just £89.99 one shouldn’t expect a truly professional image quality but it definitely seems like a good first step towards awaking a new passion for science and discovery. If only it could also take pictures of all those sparkly stars to share with your friends and family…

Christmas without board games is not Christmas at all and if you happen to be a fan of both board games and legendary mathematician and AI legend Alan Turing, then do we have a treat for you!

Monopoly has introduced a special Alan Turing Edition, with the squares around the board and revised Chance and Community Chest cards telling the story of his life along with key elements of the original hand-drawn board which the great mathematician played on in the early 1950s. The set also includes:

  • Never before seen pictures of Turing, kindly given by his family
  • Turing’s face on all the banknotes – putting him on the £10 note as per the current petition!
  • Huts and Blocks (the buildings which housed the Bletchley Park code breakers and their machines)  in place of traditional houses and hotels
  • The story of the board, and explanations of the squares throughout.

At £29.99 you can treat yourself and your family to a little bit of educational geekery and hopefully learn something new and useful in the process.

This is a gadget from the future – think hands-free recording of what’s around you without the faff of carrying a cumbersome camera. Good for taking pictures of activities that require you to use both hands, such as skiing, cycling, mountain biking or other extreme sports… you get the idea.

Xmas-Image-61-300x300The shades come with a 1.3 mega pixel CMOS hidden camera in the frame, so that you can video record whatever it is you are looking at. Plus they include an in built MP3 player, enabling you to provide a sound track to your film. For such a small camera lens the video resolution is an acceptable 640 x 480, 25fps.

The website selling these glasses stresses their ‘coolness’ but we wouldn’t go that far! These glasses will only look good on you if you also happen to be wearing biking or sky-diving gear to justify the fairly obtrusive nature of this design. But looks are not why we would love to get this gadget – it’s the novelty factor of being able to walk around filming semi-secretly like a covert agent!

The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 13.3″ Convertible Touchscreen Ultrabook™ is an interesting addition to the slowly growing family of 2-in-1 hybrid devices that combine a tablet and a laptop. It features a 10-point multi-touch screen, full 360° flip facility and Windows 8 as its operating system.

The Convertible Ultrabook™ is powered by a 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i7-3517U processor, which is handy for multitasking. Loading times are made swift thanks to a 4 GB RAM memory, while the 128 GB SSD provides sufficient storage space for files and applications. With its minute size – just 17 mm thin and 1.54 kg – it makes a great mobile device, versatile enough to serve as a one-stop shop for most of our needs on the go.

It looks like a standard laptop, but the 13-inch screen folds back on itself, allowing for using the device in the form of a tablet, tent or stand.

At almost £1000 a pop this little device is on the expensive side, plus its size, standard for a laptop, means that it is a bit clunky to use as a tablet – don’t expect to be able to hold it in one hand and scroll with the other. However it is still an interesting gadget and we certainly wouldn’t mind trying out all the newest games on it!
